Central Carolina Technical College Renovation Case Study
Case Study. Technical College Renovation Features Fire Rated Glass Walls. To create open, transparent lab classroom settings, renovation architects used fire rated glass in walls requiring 1 hour ratings.
This project entailed the complete renovation of an existing +/- 69,000-sf structure into a state-of-the-art health education facility for Central Carolina Technical College’s Health Sciences Department. The programs offered here are very hands-on and are geared towards teaching skills that help students seek employment in hospitals, physicians’ offices, long-term care facilities, and other health care agencies.
That is why central to this building’s design are several simulation labs, practice labs, and mock operating rooms where students can observe instructors and each other as they perform their tasks. Because these labs are in areas where a 1-hour fire rating has to be maintained, the architects chose to combine vision, transparency, and fire safety with SuperLite II-XL 60 in GPX Architectural Series Framing.
The architect also wanted to have a similar look between the interior storefront system and the interior fire-rated system as the two were adjacent to one another in many locations inside the building. To achieve this, SAFTI FIRST® matched the profiles and the finish as close as possible to create the seamless look that the architect desired.
In addition to the labs, SAFTI FIRST® also provided SuperLite II-XL 60 in GPX Architectural Series Framing for the computer labs, student lounge, and student library, giving the building an open, airy feeling while still meeting building code requirements.
